What is this qualification about?
The Certificate IV in Small Business Management is designed to develop management and entrepreneurial skills. You will learn how to identify, evaluate and select business opportunities. You will also be able to undertake business planning, prepare financial plans, marketing plans, HR plans, promotional plans and manage overall business operations This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to plan, establish, promote and operate a small business (up to 30 employees). You will also learn to establish the legal and risk management requirements of small business in a wide variety of small business contexts.
This business management qualification will be valuable if you are already in an established business venture, entering the family business, or considering setting up your own business venture. Opportunities relevant to this qualification include trade professionals, bookkeepers, retail staff, senior employees, farmers, insurance agents.
What will you learn?
The qualification is designed to provide you with an intensive, action-oriented, interactive learning experience. You will identify a business opportunity (real or imagined) with a designated mentor before classes commence. The focus is on real-world application of knowledge and skills, and you will ultimately develop a business plan during the three months. The business plan will be presented to a panel as part of their assessment. Along the way, you will be guided while developing financial, marketing, HR, promotional and strategic plans for your business opportunities. Business opportunities can be worked on in teams if the size of the opportunity justifies it.

You will obtain the knowledge required to identify and comply with the regulatory, legal, taxation and insurance requirements, and risk management needs of small business

You will learn how to develop and implement marketing strategies, and to monitor and improve market performance.
Plan small business finances
This unit will enable you to develop a financial plan to support business viability. You will also learn about the specific legal requirements that apply to the management of a small business.
Undertake small business planning
You will acquire the skills and knowledge needed to research and develop an integrated business plan for achieving business goals and objectives. You will also learn about the specific legal requirements that apply to the management of a small business.
Monitor and manage small business operations
You will learn how to operate a small business and to implement a business plan. The strategies involve monitoring, managing and reviewing operational procedures. You will also learn about the specific legal requirements that apply to the management of a small business.
Manage a small team
You will learn how to plan for the management of and to manage staff. This involves industrial relations, staff selection, staff records, induction, training, team development and career. You will also learn about the specific legal requirements that apply to the management of a small business.
Build and maintain relationships with small business stakeholders
You will obtain the knowledge required to establish and develop relationships with small business key stakeholders, and roles and responsibilities in the small business.
Address customer needs

Assessment
Assessment occurs in a simulated work environment and consists of assignments, projects and presentations. If you are employed, assessment can occur in the workplace.
